Every business has its own challenges, but a genuine crisis emerged in mid November 2024 for beloved sandwich shop Fat Sal’s when the local’s chain’s location in the Hollywood Media District at 1306 N. Highland Ave. was destroyed in a fire, The blaze, which started in an adjacent AutoZone and quickly consumed the entire strip mall, snarled traffic around Hollywood made the news all over SoCal. But before the smoke even cleared, Fat Sal’s namesake owner Salvatore Capek and his team jumped into action, securing a new location less than two blocks away at 1154 N. Highland Ave.
In under a week, the new spot (which until recently was operating as the Next Door Lounge nightclub) was up and running, with orders pouring in from fans who feared they might have to go without one of Sal’s multi-layered mouthwatering masterpieces like the Fat Texas with pastrami brisket, chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks. There’s even a brand new signature Fat Sal’s sign already hung on the buildings exterior. Sal’s even took the time to bring a little levity to the situation, making a playful post on Instagram that reads “It’s chill bro. Fat Sal’s will come back.” Turns out, they really meaning their company slogan, “We’re Makin Sandwiches Over Here.” It just that now the “here” is right down the street.
