Media District Farmers' Market - Grand Opening

Rain or shine, the HMD Farmers' Market opens Friday, March 1, from 10:30a.m. to 3:00p.m. at the 1100 block of Cole Street, next to the Hollywood/Cole Recreational Center between Santa Monica Blvd. and Lexington Ave. Look for the colorful banners on Santa Monica Blvd.

The Media District Farmers' market is a partnership with SEE-LA (Sustainable Economic Enterprises) and The Hollywood Media District. HMD is providing the sponsorship money for the Farmers' Market to launch. This sponsorship fulfills the mission statement for HMD and the contract with the City of Los Angeles for community outreach. Most farmers' markets are not profitable the first year because of start up costs. Our partner, SEE-LA also runs the very successful Hollywood Farmers' Market on Ivar.

HMD made a strong commitment to insure that our farmers market is successful too. SEE-LA's mission statement is to service the low and moderate-income population of Los Angeles by providing assistance for start-up and support of sustainable economic enterprises throughout the city. This makes the partnership between SEE-LA and HMD, both non-profits, perfect!

Council Member Eric Garcetti, who championed the HMD Farmers' Market, will open the day's festivities at the market with the traditional "carrot breaking". Several other surprise guests will appear as well. We have invited children from Hollywood Little Red School House, Bancroft Middle School, Boys & Girls Club and the children attending the City of Los Angles programs at Hollywood/Cole Recreation to join us for the festivities. There will be music from a local band, face painting & balloons. There will also be several special prize drawings for gifts donated by the Media District businesses and SEE-LA who will provide fruit & vegetable baskets to be given away. Gold's Gym trainers will demonstrate how to use fruits & vegetables for weight training and Honda of Hollywood will be on hand with a hybrid car to explain their fuel efficient cars.

"For the businesses in our district, this is a dream realized," says HMD Chairman Jeff Anthony, vice president of Iron Mountain Film and Sound. "The revitalization of this area is a joint venture between the residents and business; one that we interpret as 'participatory'. Not one of us is interested in just throwing money at a project and calling it 'community outreach.' We choose to be involved."

More facts: March 1st is a perfect day to open the Farmers Market because March is National Nutrition Month. Our market is the 341st market in the State of California. The Media District is a certified open-air Farmers' Market, a distinction held by very few markets.

We will be contacting the businesses within the Media District to distribute flyers and/or payroll inserts to let your employees know about the market and that it is a lunchtime alternative on Fridays. We also have color posters that we need displayed in your businesses. Please call the HMD office if you need flyers or poster for your business.

Please mark your calendars and join us for the freshest lunchtime destination and the best fruits and vegetables direct from the farmers on Friday, March 1st from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and EVERY FRIDAY thereafter.

    A Job Well Done

On his routine patrol of the Hollywood Media District, Security Supervisor, James Leonard, discovered a long term transient named "Lewis" in a vacant building on Santa Monica Boulevard. Officer Leonard discovered that Lewis had found a way into the building where he would lock himself inside. He also allowed "friends" to stay with him inside the building and park their cars on the parking lot. Officer Leonard contacted the real estate broker and ask permission to remove Lewis and his friends from the building. Surrounding businesses saw Langner Security gently but effectively removing Lewis from the area and reported that he was constantly bothering their customers. He was also allegedly seen making drug transactions. Thanks Officer Leonard for a job well done!

Unsecured vacant buildings present a threat to all the surrounding properties. Typically when transients occupy a vacant building, they build a fire to keep warm. There is a good possibility of starting a fire in an unsecured building. Langner Security can check all entries into the building and contact you if a door or gate is not secured. Please be reminded to call Langner Security at: 323.871.4150 or HMD at: 323.460.6322 to let us know if your building is vacant of if a building near you is vacant. Your Media District assessment pays for this service.
